Rotary announces scholarship awards
The Rotary Club of Kirkland announced its annual scholarship awards April 7.
Eleven students each received scholarship support of $1,500. One Rotary scholarship will be awarded to a Cascadia Community College student in May. This $18,000 in scholarships is the most ever awarded in one year.
The winners this year and their schools were : Wendolynn Garcia (Best High School) Chelsea Stevenson, Gedion Yitref, Julian Cortes, John Le, Stephanie Gall, and Paulina Przystupa (Juanita High School) and Anthony Noble, Georgeanne Smith, Heidi Cole, and Joy Knoke (Lake Washington Technical College).
Schools foundation hosting fundraiser
The Lake Washington Schools Foundation will host its third “Legacy for Learning” luncheon on April 30, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Field House at Juanita High School.
The “Legacy for Learning” luncheon is an annual fundraising event dedicated to providing supplemental funding for learning opportunities that support excellence in education and encourage students to reach their full potential.
Dennis Bounds, King 5 TV News anchor, is returning for his third year as master of ceremonies. Speakers will include students impacted by the Foundation efforts as well as educators in the district.

Local team creates winning robots
Engineering Explorer Post 2036, nick-named “Exothermic Robotics Club” by its members, was started to serve students who attend Redmond High School, Redmond Junior High School and the International Community School in Kirkland.
Now in its second year of existence, the Post sent three teams to the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics tournament last month at the Tacoma Convention Center.
Team 418 and their robot “Chopstix” made it into the finals and then won the “Inspire” award for the best all-around team at the event and an invitation to the World Championships in Atlanta on April 16-19.
