The Juanita girls swim team (200) finished second behind Mercer Island (289) for the district title Saturday at Mary Wayte pool. The team was led by Kelly Tannhauser and Emilee Kaufman, who continue to push each other. Tannhauser won the 100-yard backstroke during the meet and broke Kaufman’s record she set earlier this season. Not to be outdone, Kaufman won the 100 freestyle and broke Tannhauser’s record.
During the prelims Kaufman set an All-American time of 1:04.35 in the 100 breaststroke. Kaufman continues to get stronger with every meet as she beat that time during the finals by .11 seconds. She also placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.37. Tannhauser placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.45 and 500-yard freestyle (5:06.51).
In a rare turn of events the Rebels kept Mercer Island from sweeping the relays. Kaufman, Hanna Armstrong, Rachael Kurtz and Tannhauser teammed up in the 400-yard freestyle relay for the district title with a time of 3:39.28. The same team members also took the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.8.
Juanita will contend for the state title Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
