Storm water may not be on the minds of most Kirkland citizens but the City hopes residents and businesses will learn about proposed tasks to address water quality issues.

As part of the State Department of Ecology’s strategic plan to improve water quality in the Puget Sound, it is allowing cities within Western Washington to properly discharge stormwater with valid permits. The permit, known as the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, requires that cities, including Kirkland, develop programs that address stormwater issues such as spill prevention, erosion control, and maintenance of stormwater systems. Public comment is required by the State.

Kirkland citizens are encouraged to comment on Kirkland’s Draft 2009 Stormwater Management Program document by Monday, March 30. The State DOE has identified stormwater as a significant contributor that degrades water quality in the Puget Sound. Storm water pollution results from everyday activities such as driving, yard care and car washing. Land development, such as construction of homes and commercial buildings, often result in stormwater runoff. The City’s Stormwater Management Program requires that new development and redevelopment reduce pollutants in runoff through erosion control and water quality treatment.
