I am writing because I feel so strongly about the actions of Kirkland residents during the Triathlon held Saturday. I was one volunteer of many from a local high school group. I would like to thank the race organizers for their efforts, while also admonishing the residents of Kirkland, particularly those along Lake Washington Boulevard and Lakeview. I hope they had the opportunity to reflect on their selfish and dangerous behavior regarding the safety of the athletes and the volunteers along the course. Many of the race volunteers were high school students. Almost every driver I spoke to regarding a change in the traffic route and using care while crossing the road was rude, felt entitled and astounded that thousands of triathletes would be interfering with their day’s plan. At least three triathletes on the bike route were inches from being hit by a car due to the driver’s inpatience and furious reaction. And while I agree I should not judge many by the behavior of a few, the incidents I encountered were by almost every driver at the intersection I manned. Volunteering at such events is a great way for the members of our high school group to gain volunteer experience. However, I highly doubt we will put them in harm’s way again next year.
