Jim Hart is no longer seeking a seat on the Kirkland City Council.
The longtime Kirkland resident and land surveyor cited family health concerns for withdrawing from the race Friday.
“I have decided to withdraw from the race for City Council to focus my time on family health concerns,” said Hart, who is in his 80s. “I am truly humbled by the support I have received from the many citizens of Kirkland, and wish nothing but the best for the future of our community.”
That leaves Councilman Dave Asher as the only active candidate on the November ballot for Position 6.
“That’s news to me,” Asher told the Reporter, which notified him of the withdrawal on Friday afternoon. “I just saw some of his yard signs going up a few days ago.”
Asher added he was also sorry to hear of Hart’s personal situation.
“He hasn’t been able to make the candidate forums because of that and I’m sorry to hear he has to drop out for that reason,” said Asher. “I send my best to him and his family.”
While Hart’s name will still appear on the November ballot, he will not be pursuing the seat. However, Asher said he still plans to actively campaign to ensure voters know what his candidacy is about.
“The greatest part of campaigning is getting out to meet people in the community – I enjoy that immensely. So campaigning for that purpose alone is well worth the time,” added Asher.
Candidate Martin Morgan was also on the primary ballot, but did not garner enough votes to move on to the general election.
