Early this spring, several Spanish and French students from Kamiakin Junior High School in Kirkland participated in the National Spanish Exam and the French National Contest. Taught by Rona Chumbook, 13 students came away with national honors in the National Spanish Exam, and 10 students earned chapter honors in the National French Contest.
Kamiakin Spanish winners (ranking in the 50th-98th percentiles nationally) include: Elena Plenefisch, oro (gold); Gabrielle Hsu, plata (silver); Daniel Stone and Li Wang, bronce (bronze). The following students also received premio, or the medal of excellence: Emma Frostad, Oliver Hu, Devon Jones, Suelena Lee, Vincent Ly, Jennifer Nguyen, Colin Pate, Lana Redlich and Alyanna Thongoulay.
National French Contest WA/AK Chapter winners (ranking in the 45th-80th percentiles nationally) from Kamiakin include: Maia Carlisle, Tess Farley, Nick Jensen, Katy Sjolund, Stephanie Langford, Steffen Felt and Åjay Joshi, 1st-5th place; and Logan Heine, Annie Kulshreshtha and Cathy Matey, 7th-9th place.
Each of these highly competitive exams drew more than 110,000 participants nationwide.
All national and chapter winners will receive certificates and prizes for their accomplishments provided by the sponsoring organizations, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the American Association of Teachers of French.
