Basketball: Lake Washington girls beat by Newport in first round of 4A KingCo tourney

The Lake Washington girls basketball team was defeated by Newport Wednesday, 58-43, during the first round of the 4A KingCo tournament at Newport High School. The loss puts the Kangs in a loser-out game at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday at Juanita High School against Skyline.

The Lake Washington girls basketball team was defeated by Newport Wednesday, 58-43, during the first round of the 4A KingCo tournament at Newport High School. The loss puts the Kangs in a loser-out game at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday at Juanita High School against Skyline.

During the game, Lake Washington got off to a slow start and behind by five points after eight minutes of play. Newport continued to slowly stretch that lead during the duration of the game. The biggest issue that the Kangs had on defense was slowing down Betsy Kingma, who led all scorers with 29 points. Colleen Walsh (15 points) and Katarina Whitfield (11) led the Kangs in scoring.
