The Kirkland Park Board invites citizens to submit suggestions for the naming of a public open space tract in the North Juanita neighborhood.  The one-acre property, located on Northeast 129th Street between 111th Place Northeast and 112th Place Northeast, has recently been reclaimed for neighborhood use through the restoration activities of local volunteers. Neighbors and other volunteers organized by the Green Kirkland Partnership have spent several months clearing and cleaning up the site, removing invasive plants and planting native trees and shrubs. Children’s play equipment will be added later this year.

Name suggestions should be submitted before June 1, 2015 to the Park Board by email at parkboard@kirklandwa.gov and should be consistent with the City’s park naming policy, which states that the name of a park or open space should be based on one or more of the following criteria: neighborhood or geographical identification; a natural or geological feature; historical or cultural significance; an individual (living or deceased) who has given outstanding civic service to the Kirkland park system, or has donated substantial funds or land to the Kirkland park system, or has been otherwise instrumental in the acquisition or development of critical park acreage; and a civic group or corporation whose mission statement is compatible with City goals and objectives and that has made a significant contribution of civic service, land, or money to the Kirkland park system.

The Park Board is anticipated to forward a naming recommendation to the City Council for final approval this summer.
