A 19-year-old soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord is a person of interest in the murder of a Juanita woman.

Scarlett Paxton, 19, was found stabbed to death at the Hidden Firs apartment complex behind the Juanita Albertson’s on Nov. 30.

Joe Kubistek, spokesman for Joint Base Lewis-McChord, said the soldier was booked into the Regional Correctional Facility on base on Nov. 30 for going absent without leave (AWOL).

“He had gone AWOL several times and he was considered a flight risk,” said Kubistek, adding that Kirkland police notified base personnel that the soldier was a person of interest in the slaying the same day he was booked into custody.

Authorities have not identified the soldier yet as he has not been charged, but Kubistek said he has been in the Army over a year and he once missed a mandatory unit movement.

Kirkland police also questioned the soldier the same day as the murder in connection with an unrelated 911 call, Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray told the Seattle Times. He said there is no evidence that the soldier and Paxton knew each other.
