Approximately 80 Green Kirkland Partnership volunteers worked with EarthCorps officials Saturday to help restore Juanita Bay Park.

A herd of hungry Rent-A-Ruminant goats also helped to eat away invasive plant species and bramble during the event.

At Carl Sandburg Elemetary/Discovery Community School, dozens of students and families worked to pull weeds and pick up litter Sunday.

The school is celebrating 10 years of being an herbicide free school, said Susan Vossler, co-chair of the school’s green team.

Ten years ago, a parent concerned about the chemicals that were being used on school grounds for weed management spearheaded an agreement with the Lake Washington School District. Parent volunteers would help maintain the school grounds by hand weeding and mulching in order to provide a safer, healthier environment for the kids and neighborhood. The program remains in place.
