Kirkland Fire Department crews found a 10-year-old girl performing CPR on her 40-year-old father via directions from a NORCOM regional emergency dispatcher on Nov.16.
Crews were dispatched to the home in the 15700 block of 119th Ave. NE at 5:17 p.m. for a cardiac arrest call. The initial report stated that child CPR was being performed.
Aid 27 crew confirmed the cardiac arrest and initiated King County EMS life saving protocols and shocked the patient with the newly acquired FR3 defibrillator.
Redmond Medics arrived moments after Aid 27 and took over the life saving efforts. Woodinville units and Kirkland Ladder 27 soon arrived and further assisted with the lifesaving efforts.
The Medics were able to stabilize the patient and transport him to the Evergreen Hospital and Medical Center Emergency Department.
Thanks to the efforts of Nizhoni Newman and the assistance of her six-year-old brother Ayeteway, their father Turak Newman survived this traumatic event. Now, he has an internal defibrillator that automatically shocks his heart if needed.
“From Nizhoni’s heroic efforts, to the 911 dispatcher giving telephone CPR instructions and the EHMC ED team, this was a cardiac arrest success story for the King County EMS system,” said Battalion Chief Mike Haschak. “Mr. Newman was able to spend Thanksgiving at home with his family.”
