A Kirkland mom was arrested for the alleged assault of a 12-year-old Little League player after a baseball game at Everest Park ball field Saturday, May 2.

According to the police report, 41-year-old Jodi Scheffler was arrested and booked at the Kirkland Police Department for fourth-degree assault of a child.

Witnesses said during Saturday’s baseball game, Scheffler’s son mouthed off to one of the coaches and was told to sit out the rest of the game.

After the game, Scheffler allegedly approached a 12-year-old boy on the opposing team and his brother when she noticed they were taunting her son, according to police documents. The squabble then escalated as Scheffler called the 12-year-old “white trash” and told him to “shut his mouth,” grabbing his chin and shoving him backwards, the boy told police.

The boy then grabbed her hand and tried to move it off him. He told police Scheffler “hurt him” and he was “scared she was going to slap him.”

The responding officer noted he did not see any visible injuries on the victim.

The boy also said he knew Scheffler and has played baseball with her children.

Several witnesses told police they observed the incident, including the boy’s father who is pursuing criminal charges. Another unidentified adult told the 12-year-old not to speak to adults that way during the altercation.

Scheffler told police during her interaction with the boy, he made an annoying noise, at which point she “touched his face without pressure and told him to stop talking,” demonstrating how she took her right hand and her fingers on one side of the boy’s chin and her thumb on the other.

She also told police that the boy’s father intervened and chest butted her, screaming at her not to touch his son.

Police later arrested Scheffler at her Kirkland home for fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail if she is found guilty. She was booked at the Kirkland Police Department and released on her recognizance.

Fellow Little League mom Valerie Burmester, who was at Saturday’s game, said she saw the argument between the two parents after the game.

“We’re all passionate about baseball and everyone gets caught up in it,” she said, noting the situation was “horrible.”

Burmester added, however, that she believes the incident was taken too far by all the parties involved.

“I think she (Scheffler) stepped over the line when she touched the kid, but I don’t feel she should have been arrested,” Burmester said.

Scheffler’s family declined to comment.

Kirkland Police are investigating the case and the Kirkland American Little League will also decide whether the organization will impose any penalties. According to the League’s code of conduct, parties shall “never verbally or physically abuse a player or official.
