Since I announced my candidacy, I’ve been questioned about my residency, where my campaign contributions come from, where I voted, whether I am favored by this newspaper, whether I am even qualified to run for Position 5 on the city council. Instead, I believe that I should be questioned about the issues facing Kirkland.
I was born in Portland, Oregon. My mother remarried an Australian man when I was 9 years old. I lived there until her death from breast cancer in 1994. One of my great opportunities was to study at the University of Queensland and to earn a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science, and a Bachelor of Laws. Like many attorneys, I did not enjoy practice.
Upon returning to Oregon, I was unable to practice law until preparing a successful application to the Supreme Court of Oregon, for permission to take the Bar exam. By this time, I had, out of necessity, taken a job at the local car dealership as a cashier. Again, I was given many opportunities, studied accounting and over the years, was ultimately promoted to the CFO position I now hold.
Throughout my career, the education I received has helped me analyze problems and recommend creative solutions. I have been able assist my employers by reviewing contracts and leases, managing human resource challenges, and negotiating disputes to avoid litigation. I hope to earn the opportunity to bring this skill set to the douncil.
In 2005, my husband and I invested our life savings in Ford of Kirkland. It was a struggling business, but with the support of the community, we have been able to turn it into the No. 1 selling Ford store in the state of Washington, and now the No. 1 Hyundai dealer (in a tie) as well. We’ve also won the President’s Award, Ford’s highest award for customer satisfaction every year that we’ve been in business. In a difficult business climate for auto dealers, we have been able to operate efficiently and create a family environment for our team. I hope to bring my business management skills to the council, to serve the citizens of Kirkland.
When we moved here, I had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I thank the people at Evergreen Hospital for saving my life The Kirkland community welcomed me, and this experience has left me with a powerful desire to serve. Through our business, we Adopt a Highway, hold quarterly blood drives, donate vehicles to Komen, provide emergency vehicles to Evergreen Hospital, provide vehicles for parades and fundraisers, sponsor the PACE race, and participate in many community activities. Kirkland is our home, and our future. I invite any questions about my qualifications or point-of-view to my e-mail, amy@amywalen.com , or to my cell phone 425-381-1909.
