Each year many Lake Washington Elementary library media specialists sponsor a Battle of the Books with fourth- and fifth-grade students at their schools. This year, 14 Lake Washington School District elementary schools participated in the contest, with three fourth-graders, Ella Doherty, Madeleine Tremblay and Eliza Mannion, from Robert Frost winning the event.
Twelve books were selected by the library media specialists from among many award nominated and popular books. The student teams read the books and then battled each other to see who could answer the most questions correctly about each book. Among the 14 schools participating, there were a total of 196 teams of fourth and fifth graders. The district was split between the east and west sides and battles took place between the schools in their respective divisions. Then a final battle took place between the winning teams of the east and west. This year the final battle was between the winning teams at Einstein Elementary and Robert Frost Elementary. This final battle was intense. It ended in a “sudden death” battle to break a tie between the two evenly matched teams.
