It came down to a the last 30 seconds of the game last Saturday, but Camas held off Juanita to end the Rebel’s dynamic 2010 football season.
In the team’s first playoff trip since 1994, the Rebels had a chance to tie the game at 20 points apiece in the waning seconds of the match, but on the a fourth and sixth from the 10-yard line, quarterback Derek Kaufman handed the ball off to Jeremiah Laufasa who was stopped short of the line, returning the ball back to the Papermakers.
Camas ran the clock out to end the Rebels season with a 9-2 record, the best for the program since 1989.
Traveling down to Camas, located near Vancouver, Wash. the Rebels started off the night at Doc Harris Stadium playing catch up after Camas’ Addison Owen scored the first touchdown of the night on a 7-yard run. The Papermakers kick failed, handing the Rebels a chance to take the lead with just one touchdown.
The team did just that when Dom Chadwhick recovered the ball in the end zone later in the first quarter. But the Papermakers recovered to block the kick, tying the game at 6-6.
Camas kept the Juanita offense from mounting much ground during the second quarter, while the Papermakers ran forward, scoring with 2:42 left in the first half, off a 6-yard Tony Gennaro pass to Kyle Ervin. The kick by Roldan Alcobendas was solid for a 13-6 lead.
Neither team was able to successfully break into the end zone during the third quarter, but for how quiet it was on the scoreboard in the third, the fourth quarter quickly made up for it.
Camas received the ball with 9:35 left to play in the game off a badly snapped punt by Juanita, giving the Papermakers the ball on the Juanita 18-yard line. A false start call pushed Camas back to the 23, and the Papermakers lined up for a field goal. But the kick was blocked and defensive lineman Cody Treddenbarger scooped up the ball, running for a 70-yard touchdown to tie the game 13-13 with 8:20 left on the clock.
Unwilling to let a possible first ever playoff win slip away, Camas rebounded less than a minute later as Gennaro connected with Jeremy Faulkner for a 9-yard pass to give Camas the 20-13 lead.
The Rebels pushed and prodded their way down field, making it to the 10-yard line with less than a minute on the clock, but down and time would run out before they could tie the match.
