The city of Kirkland has partnered with Puget Sound Energy to support the utility’s Green Power Challenge. This program encourages the use of renewable energy and puts Kirkland in the running for $40,000.
The challenge seeks to enroll an additional 400 Kirkland households and businesses by Dec. 31. By enrolling, customers choose renewable energy to match a percentage of their electricity needs and Puget Sound Energy purchases that energy from local producers of wind, sun and biomass power. Every dollar contributed supports the development of renewable energy.
For as little as $4 or more per month, or $20 for your business, you can match a portion of your electricity to local, clean, renewable sources from the west.
If Kirkland achieves its target goal, the utility will give the City $20,000 for a solar demonstration project in the city.
As part of the challenge, Kirkland is in stiff competition with the cities of Snoqualmie, Anacortes, Tumwater, and Bainbridge Island to have the highest enrollment rate. As of late July, Kirkland is trailing behind Snoqualmie and Tumwater but ahead of Anacortes and Bainbridge Island.
If Kirkland’s enrollment rate is greater than the other cities, it will receive an additional $20,000.
