Eagles dominate conference Player of the Week awards | Northwest U. Athletics

It was a big week for Northwest University Athletics as soccer and volleyball nearly swept all the Cascade Conference Red Lion player of the week awards as announced by the conference office today.

It was a big week for Northwest University Athletics as soccer and volleyball nearly swept all the Cascade Conference Red Lion player of the week awards as announced by the conference office today.

Jordan Travis was named men’s soccer offensive player of the week; Daniel Christenson was named defensive player of the week for soccer; Whitney Weaver earned women’s soccer offensive player of the week honors; Lauren (Patefield) Hellum, defensive player of the week; Mattie Jo Johnson, volleyball attacker of the week; and, Leia Roy, volleyball defensive player of the week.

Volleyball – Attacker – Mattie Jo Johnson

Johnson, a junior middle blocker from Rosalia, Wash., had a solid weekend of play in the Eagles’ two road victories. Tied for team honors on Saturday in kills with 10 and hit .500 for the three set match. Had a .429 attack average for the two matches including the big win over Southern Oregon on Saturday. NU improved to 4-0 in conference play, 7-2 overall.

Volleyball – Defender – Leia Roy

Roy, a senior libero from Puyallup, Wash., made key defensive plays in both the Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon matches to help NU maintain their tie for the top spot in the CCC. Their win at SOU was the first victory since the Eagles defeated the Raiders in Kirkland in 2004.

Men’s Soccer – Defensive – Daniel Christenson

Christenson, a junior goalkeeper from Bothell, Wash., made seven saves in the win against Whitman including a key save in the 103rd minute second overtime period to allow the Eagles to score the golden goal three minutes later for the win. NU improved to 4-1 for the season.

Men’s Soccer- Offensive – Jordan Travis

Travis, a freshman forward from Bothell, Wash., scored both goals including the golden goal in the 106th minute to give Northwest U the road victory. Travis leads the team with four goals this season.

Women’s Soccer Defensive – Lauren Hellum

Hellum (formerly Patefield), a senior goalkeeper from Puyallup, Wash., earned two straight shutouts last week in 180 minutes in goal for the Eagles helping NU get off to their best start since becoming a program in 2007.

Women’s Soccer Offensive – Whitney Weaver

Weaver, sophomore midfielder from Spokane, Wash., scored the game winner in each NU victory last week. The Eagles are off to their best start since the program began in 2007 at 4-1 for the season.
