The Juanita High boys’ cross country team will have a lot of holes to fill this season.
Last fall, the Rebel boys’ team qualified for the state championships for the first time in 14 seasons. Led by a group of four seniors, Juanita finished second at the KingCo championships, second at the District II championships and ninth at state.
But outside of the top six — Tom Mikkelson, Noah Kells, Grant Mackey and Nick Goodwin were the seniors — most of the varsity-bubble runners will be back, led by incoming senior Adrian Goodwin.
Goodwin posted the third-fastest time for the Rebels last fall and had a strong finish to his junior season as a distance runner on the track team. He’ll captain the boys’ team alongside fellow senior Michael Gengo, the Rebels’ seventh-fastest runner last season.
Behind the two seniors are a handful of promising athletes, including juniors Noah Tyler and Nathan Ferrell.
The girls’ team has far more returning experience, with nearly all of the top pieces back in the fold.
Payton Palsson was the team’s fastest runner, nearly breaking 21 minutes at the KingCo championships last October as a junior. She and incoming junior Hannah Huff will serve as the team’s captains.
The Rebels also welcome the return of incoming junior Katrina Teo, second-fastest from last season behind Palsson. Claire Jacobsen will be a senior.
The season is scheduled to begin Wedesday afternoon. Next, the Rebels are scheduled to take part in the Tacoma Co-Ed Relays on Sept. 10 at Lake Wilderness State Park in Maple Valley.
