When the season began, Lake Washington High girls soccer coach Ashton Griffen liked her team’s chances at state should the Kangs make it through the KingCo tournament.
Lake Washington iced a berth in the conference championship match with a 2-0 conference victory over Mercer Island on Wednesday at Mac Field in Kirkland — meaning the Kangs will have at least two shots at qualifying for the state tournament.
Lake Washington (10-4-0 KingCo, 11-4-1) scored in the ninth minute and held a two-goal lead at halftime.
The Kangs held off Mercer Island to finish second in the conference standings, and are scheduled to play Bellevue for the conference title on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Bellevue High School. The loser on Saturday moves on to play for second place on Nov. 1.
Bellevue won both matches against Lake Washington this season, beating the Kangs 4-2 on Sept. 23 and getting a late goal to beat the Kangs 2-1 on Oct. 18.
The winner of the first- and second-place matches both qualify for the state tournament.
For Juanita (2-9-3, 3-9-4) the road is a little tougher.
The Rebels lost to Bellevue, 3-0, on Wednesday and enter the conference tournament as the No 5 seed. Juanita is scheduled to play Redmond in a loser-out match on Friday, Oct. 28 at Redmond High School.
Redmond and Juanita played to a scoreless draw on Sept. 13, and Redmond beat Juanita 2-0 on Oct. 6.
