Google announced today it is releasing a new one-on-one video calling application called Google Duo.

The app was designed by a local team at Kirkland’s Google campus and utilizes Knock Knock technology which lets users see live video of the caller before answering.

The app is cross-compatible with Android and iOS operating systems and, most notably, facilitates a smooth transition between wireless and cell service.

According to a press release issued by Google, the app automatically detects which connection source to use and switches between them when necessary to maintain a steady call. It also detects connection speeds and adjusts the call quality automatically.

Google Duo does not require a Google account, and users can integrate it into their phone’s contact list.
