Makiah Gilmer set the fastest mark in the 100-meter dash of any Juanita athlete since 2012 as the Juanita High track and field team competed against Bellevue on Thursday, April 29 at Juanita High School.
Gilmer became the first athlete since Travis Marshall to run the 100 meters in under 11 seconds, and set the season’s eighth-fastest mark so far in the State of Washington at 10.96 seconds — at any level.
Only two sprinters have set better times than Gilmer at the Class 3A level, and no one has beaten his time from the KingCo 3A League.
Salvon Ahmed finished a close second in the 100 on Thursday in 11.03 seconds, a new career-best. Ahmed also set a career-best in winning the 200 meters at 22.98 seconds.
Randy Jones won the 400 meters, setting a new career-best of 51.17 seconds, and won the long jump and triple jump.
Juanita took the top-three spots 800, and had the top eight finishers in the 1,600 meters. Senior Tom Mikkelson won the event with his second-fastest time of the year: a blistering 4 minutes, 30.6 seconds.
Juanita’s Grant Mackey won the 3,200 meters in 10:27.
Senior Nathan Casebier swept the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles, with teammate Santiago Varela taking second in both events.
The Rebels won both relays by a wide margin.
Trevor Williams won the shot put for the Rebels, throwing 39 feet, 3 inches.
The Juanita girls dominated as well.
Carly Taylor won the long jump and triple jump with a pair of career-bests: 14 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and 31 feet, 1 inch in the triple jump event.
Juanita’s Katrina Teo won the pole vault at 9 feet, 6 inches.
Junior Natayah Bauer won the shot put and discus competitions, and finished second in the javelin.
Juanita swept the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays. Senior Shelby Wilks, who ran a leg of the 4×100, won the 300 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 48.91 seconds. She took second in the 100 meter hurdles to teammate Natalie Kalda.
Juanita sophomore Sophia Collins won the 800 meters, and Madeline Ingersoll won the 400 meters. Juanita freshman Jayla Kidd won the 200 meters and finished second in the 100 meters.
Next the Juanita girls’ team is scheduled to compete in the Lake Washington Invitational on Saturday, April 30 at Lake Washington High School. The boys are scheduled to compete in the Shoreline Invitational on the same day.
