CROSS COUNTRY
Juanita senior Adrian Goodwin appears primed for a solid year after edging the entire Interlake varsity team on Wednesday at Marymoor Park in Redmond.
Goodwin won the race, finishing in 16 minutes, 48 seconds — barely a second faster than Interlake junior Matthew Roberts. Interlake took the next five spots behind Roberts, had seven runners place in the top nine and — this should go without saying — won the boys’ race in impressive fashion with only 20 points.
Juanita finished second with 52 points and Lake Washington took third with 65.
Juanita’s Michael Gengo had a solid race as well, finishing eighth in 17:41. Lake Washington sophomore had the top time for the Kangs, finishing in 18:04 for 10th place.
Claire Cocales, the Lake Washington junior expected to make a run at the state championships, led a pack of runners a few minutes behind Interlake’s brass in the girls’ varsity race. Cocales was well off her personal record, but finished fourth in 21:37.
Lake Washington freshman Belle Brandenfels finished sixth in 22:04.
Juanita’s top girl was sophomore Laura Benson, who finished 11th in 22:37.
The Interlake girls won the meet with 18 points, followed by Lake Washington with 37 and Juanita with 76.
Next, Juanita and Juanita are both scheduled to take part in the Fort Steilacoom Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17.
