There wasn’t much room for error, but the Juanita High boys’ track team did what was necessary to take the 3A KingCo track and field title at the league championship meet on Friday, May 13 at Juanita High School.

The Rebel boys finished with 115 points overall, beating out Bellevue with 105.5 points. The Juanita boys won only four events, but finished in the top two of 11 events.

The Lake Washington boys finished third with 54 points.

On the girls’ side, Mercer Island edged Juanita 90-89 for the district title. Lake Washington finished fourth with 66 points.

Overall, the Juanita boys qualified athletes in 19 slots for next week’s district championships.

Speedy junior Salvon Ahmed won the 100 meters in 11.13 seconds, beating out Tyren Sams of Bellevue who came in with the top overall seed. Ahmed also finished second in the 200 meters of 22.71 seconds, finishing below the qualifying standards for the district meet in both events.

Juanita was well-represented in the middle distance and distance races. Noah Kells and Michael Gengo took second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters. Tom Mikkelson, Adrian Goodwin and Kells finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,600 meters.

Mikkelson and Goodwin finished well behind Interlake senior Luke Beauchamp, who won the mile as well, in the 3,200 meter race.

Juanita senior Nathan Casebier swept the hurdle events, setting a personal record of 14.83 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles and a PR of 40.39 seconds in the 300 meter event.

Juanita also won the 4×400 meter relay, with Brighton Maughan, Randy Jones, Gengo and Kells setting a pace of 3:26.95. The Rebels nearly won the 4×100 meter relay as well, despite almost dropping the baton on the second exchange. Ahmed made up the difference on the final leg, but finished half a second behind Lake Washington.

The Kangaroo boys won four events as well. Senior Scout Callens won the 200 meters in 22.68 seconds, while junior Brett Walker won the 400 in 51.53 seconds.

Lake Washington senior Alex Guerrero won the discus, clearing 126 feet, 5 inches. Ryan Clifford, Cody Wilson, Chet Atuanya and Nathaniel Callens combined to win the boys’ 4×400 relay.

Lake Washington and Juanita both won three events in the girls’ meet.

Juanita junior Nataya Bauer, after winning the discus on Wednesday, threw a season-best of 37 feet, 10 inches to win the shot put on Friday.

Juanita’s Natalie Kalda and Shelby Wilks took first and second, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles, while Wilks finished second in the 300 meter event.

Lake Washington junior Natalie Vetto dominated the javelin competition, clearing 127 feet, 4 inches to win by nearly 17 feet.

Lake Washington also took first and second in the high jump via Kathy Helf and Maret Helgeson, who tied at 4 feet, 10 inches. Helf took the title on faults.

Next, the qualified athletes — top three in each event, plus any remaining athletes to have matched qualifying standards — are scheduled to compete in the first day of the Sea-King District II championship meet on Wednesday, May 18. The Finals are scheduled for Friday, May 20.
