Clowns sighted in Kirkland; ‘It’s not illegal,’ KPD says

The clown craze has officially hit Kirkland.

The clown craze has officially hit Kirkland.

Police were called to investigate reports of clown sightings on Oct. 6 between Thoreau Elementary and Finn Hill Middle School. The witnesses included several middle school students and a parent of an elementary student, according to a letter sent to the elementary parents last week.

The letter references reports of two teenage boys wearing clown masks, dark hoodies and jeans in the woods between the two schools. The reports came in shortly before Thoreau was supposed to release students, and police were able to clear the situation without a change in the school’s schedule.

Kirkland Police Lt. Rob Saloum said it’s not the only time Kirkland police have heard reports of clowns during the last several weeks.

“We haven’t had anything past somebody reporting clowns near children,” Saloum said. “At this point, it’s just people saying they saw something.”

Saloum said costumed residents are likely to have an officer stop by to say hello, but it would just be a voluntary social contact.

“It’s not against the law to wear a clown costume — though many people think it should be,” Saloum said. “If [the clowns] are doing something menacing or illegal, that’s another matter.”
