While Lake Washington High School students danced to Lady Gaga at their homecoming on Saturday night, Paisley Madison grooved to “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics in a frilly green frock with lace gloves, a pearl choker and diamond necklaces at her second chance at prom.

“I never went to prom, so this is my first,” she said.

Adult proms are popping up all over the country, giving parents a night to relive and redo their prom night, or just attend one for the first time ever.

This time around, Madison and her friends didn’t have to worry about their parents’ strict curfew or getting caught drinking spiked punch.

Leaving their kids with babysitters, they said goodbye to their children for the night to enjoy a few hours reliving the high school pinnacle at the “Dance Off Pants Off” prom at the Eagles Club in downtown Kirkland.

“This is prom redemption,” said Shelly Clarke, who attended the prom with her husband in a sparkly powder blue gown.

It all began about eight months ago over a couple glasses of wine. Greg and Molly Sparhawk and Cory and Amy Sandahl chatted about the good ol’ days in high school. Greg offhandedly mentioned they should have a prom again.

“We were talking about how it would be nice to be able to do those things as an adult and not have any of those things that weigh over your head as a teenager,” said Sparhawk, who noted that he had an awkward high school prom. “I never felt confident enough to be the person I wanted to be.”

When word got to Madison about a potential prom she decided to make it happen. Over a few months, they formed prom court, decorations and venue committees.

All their hard work paid off Saturday night. The venue was transformed into an ’80s prom, complete with streamers, disco ball and a balloon arch.

Couples posed in front of a sunken ship for their “Polaroid” keepsake. The “under the sea” theme featured paper fish taped to the walls and inflatable pink octopuses sitting on tabletops.

A live band, comprised of the prom organizers, rocked the stage as the couples boogied to “My Sharona,” by The Knack. Madison, the lead singer, and her sister belted “Love Shack” by The B-52’s while Cory Sandahl played the bass guitar in his U.K. punk outfit.

At the end of the night, Kelly Lawrence and Julie Lynch were named Prom King and Queen. Adorned with a crown and tiara and royal sashes, they danced together to “Forever Young” by Alphaville blaring from the speakers.

As with any prom, some couples went out to dinner beforehand. Some ran into Lake Washington High School students there.

“We timed (the prom) so when we’re out having dinner with our lovely wives,” said Sandahl, “the future generation could gaze into the eyes of our generation to see exactly what it looks like to have prom on the other side.”

After a full night of dancing in high heels, bright frilly dresses and tuxedos the couples trickled back home, back to their lives as parents again.

“As an adult when you have kids and you’re so engrossed in their lives, it’s important to put some focus back on yourself sometimes and remember what it means to have fun,” said Sparhawk.

Maybe even more fun than they had at their prom in the actual ‘80s.

“Compared to this, it (prom) was actually pretty lame,” said Clark.
