With summer in full swing, Kirkland’s resort-town atmosphere takes a festive turn this week as the annual Summer Concert Series returns.

Outdoor performances at Marina Park run now through the end of August on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. The concerts are free, but a donation of $2 is suggested to help support the series (sponsored by the city, Evergreen Healthcare and Feek/Justice Financial Services).

The series celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer with the theme “Where were you in 1978?”

Some highlights include: disco-tribute band Afrodisiacs on July 8; Celtic music from Tiller’s Folly on July 24; Kings of Swing on July 29; Beatles tribute band Creme Tangerine on Aug. 12; and the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra on Aug. 19.

The variety of entertainers and musical performances over the next seven days offers a glimpse of how popular the Summer Concert Series has become and how wide its net is cast.

Performing tomorrow at 7 p.m. (July 10), Canadian country trio The Higgins visit Kirkland from nearby Delta, British Columbia. The group released its first album, “The Real Thing,” last month. The family band’s music is a blend of sibling harmonies, guitar-driven country and good ol’ rock n’ roll.

The series kicks off next week with world rock musicians Sol’ Jibe at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. According to the band’s press release, its sound is something like “Dave Matthews meets the Gypsy Kings.”
