Police officer crashes into park gate, taken to hospital

A rain-slicked road contributed to an accident by a Kirkland police officer early Thursday morning, as the patrol car slid and hit the entry gate to a local park. The officers injuries were not life-threatening.

The accident occurred at an entrance to Wavery Park in the 100 block of Wavery Way at about 5:30 a.m. The park is also known as Heritage Park.

The officer was responding to a report of a car prowl when he lost control of his car and it began to slide. The car, which was traveling at a high rate of speed without its siren on, came to a rest after the passenger side collided with a park gate. Despite wearing a seat belt, the officer was thrown towards the passenger side of the car and hit his head. The officer was taken to Evergreen Hospital for treatment.

The street is popular with walkers as it looks onto Lake Washington. There were no pedestrians or other traffic in the area at the time of the crash.

The call that the officer was responding to turned out to be a false alarm.
