Northwest University athletes break records during UW Indoor Open

Sunday proved to be a big day for the Northwest University (NU) track and field team during the University of Washington Indoor Open, as they established NAIA “A” and “B” standards times.

Lily Engelbrekt ran an NAIA “A” qualifying time in the women’s 1,000-meter run, finishing seventh in the field with a time of 2-minutes, 57.76-seconds. Without the adjustment for the track configuration at the Dempsey Indoor Facility, it is the second fastest 1,000-meters this season.

Sarah Estabrook followed with an NAIA “A” time in the 3,000-meters, coming in at 10:19.62, winning her heat of 23 runners and finishing under the 10:28.00 qualifying standard. Both women are members of the NU distance medley relay, which bettered its time in the event on Friday and is still the top time in the NAIA this season.

Therron “TJ” Randle finished 10th in a field of 40 in the men’s 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 49.98 seconds and achieving an NAIA “B” standard qualifying time during his first indoor meet of the year. His time establishes a new school record, breaking Jimmy Reed’s time of 51.54 seconds set in 2008.

Carter Cunningham was 15th in his heat and 31st overall in the men’s weight throw event, but established a school record in the event with his toss of 9.18 meters. He also threw the shot put 10.86 meters.

Carrie Anne Steele was 27th in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.02 meters, which ties her for the third best long jump in the NU record books.

Brian Guisinger finished 11th in the men’s 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:40.75. Riley Sine was 41st in the men’s 3,000-meters with a time of 8:45.78 (NAIA “B” – 8:44.00). The men’s 1,600-meter relay team of Gino Bruce, TJ Randle, Brian Guisinger and Dean Willis, finished 16th in 3:41.58. Tristan Walks was 41st in the women’s shot put competition with a distance of 9.29 meters.
