Warner Pacific men’s basketball player De’Corrius Sampson-Young drove to the basket with 1.6 seconds left for the game winning basket Saturday, as Warner Pacific edged Northwest U 76-75 to end the season for both teams. It also ended NU’s hopes for a 20-win season. The Eagles finish the year with a 19-9 record.

With the game in its fifth tie at 42-42, NU would go on a 12-4 run to take a 54-46 lead at the 12:10 mark after a Michael Dupree basket. Kaelan Hicks gave the Eagles their largest lead of the half, 59-50, with his basket at 9:10, but the Knights would not go away and began creeping back into the game. With 2:56 left in the game and NU up 68-61, WPC would go on a 7-1 run capped off by Josh Thomas’ three-pointer to make it a one point game, 69-68, at the 2:18 mark. Collin Malcolm would come up with a big steal for WPC with 13 seconds to go and would hit the basket and free throw for a three-point play with 11 seconds on the clock.

WPC would foul Michael Dupree at eight seconds to play, who would miss the front end of a one-and-one. Sampson-Young would then hit the game winner on a running shot at the buzzer to the one point victory.

Dupree led Northwest U (19-9, 11-9 CCC) with 25 points. Dak Shagren would score 14 points with six assists; Tre’ Benton 12 points’ and Ben Tucakovic a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The loss over shadowed an outstanding shooting night by the Eagles who hit 53 per cent for the game and 57 per cent in the second half.

The Eagles will be the No. 6 seed during this week’s conference post-season tournament.
