In a huge upset for the Lake Sammamish girls lacrosse team, the team beat Mercer Island in the state quarterfinals to advance to the state semifinals. The Lake Sammamish girls beat the Islanders 16-15 in the final moments of the game.
The teams were tied 6-6 going into the half, before the Islanders earned a four goal advantage with 10 minutes left to play. Lake Sammamish added four goals of its own to tie the score once again, before trading goals to a 15-15 tie. Kate Wagner sneaked around Mercer Island goalie Erica Eagan to give the Lake Sammamish team the upper hand with 1:40 left to play.
Allison Clements, a sophomore at Lake Washington High School, scored five goals and had an assist. Her teammate Wagner had two goals, Grace Hamilton had eight saves for the team.
Lake Sammamish advances to face the No. 1 seed in Wednesday’s state semifinal game. They will play Lakeside, the defending Division I state champion at Lakeside Upper School at 6 p.m.
