Northwest U Eagles shine at the Doris Heritage meet

The Northwest University track and field team athletes took advantage of good weather during the SPU Doris Heritage Distance Festival to post some of their best times and distances of the year on Saturday at West Seattle Stadium.

Anna Miller, returning to competition after suffering an elbow injury a year ago, threw an NAIA “A” standard distance for the javelin. Miller’s distance of 41.36 meters (135-08) was well over the NAIA “A” standard of 40.40m.

“It was a year ago from today that she last threw competitively after a serious elbow injury put her out for the season at this very meet last year,” NU head coach Mark Mandi said. “For Anna to recover and be back to this level of performance is really cool and a huge reason to praise God.”

For the second weekend meet in a row, Lily Engelbrekt met the NAIA “B” standard in the women’s 800m run coming in third with her time of 2- minutes 15.48-seconds. She also finished third in the 5,000m run finishing with a time of 18:56.66. Tristan Walks took third in the women’s shot put coming through with a throw of 9.48m (31-01.0).

For the NU men, Dean Willis won the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:22.43 and teammate Gino Bruce was second with his time of 10:33.43. TJ Randle took second in the men’s 400m dash with a time of 49.57 in an exciting race where he was edged by Walker Flynn (Unattached) who just overtook Randle down the stretch to finish in 49.42. Kyle Cole was second in the mixed 10,000m run coming across the finish line at 33:33.11.

“We had a number of personal bests and overall I thought the team looked more engaged and competitive than last week. Looking forward to seeing how we build upon today’s effort as we prepare for the WAR meet in Spokane in two weeks,” Mandi said.
