Parklane Gallery celebrated 25 years in 2016, and this year, its beloved Annual International Juried Miniature Art Show is hitting that milestone.
The exhibit opens May 2 and continues through June 4, featuring more than 300 mini masterpieces from around the world. The show features pieces from artists of all ages in a variety of media. Akiko Watanabe and Linda Rossin, who are known for their miniature work, will have pieces in the Parklane show.
“Not only is (the art) beautiful and popular, this show has stature internationally,” Forrest Goldade, marketing volunteer and artist at Parklane, said.
The gallery has strict guidelines for the mini masterpieces on display in the show. The item depicted in the painting, drawing or sculpture must be no larger than one sixth of the item’s actual size. It also can be smaller than that, of course. Two-dimensional work can’t exceed 25 square inches, and three-dimensional work can’t exceed four inches in any direction, including the base.
“It’s a particular discipline,” Goldade said of creating miniature art.
Due to the small nature of the pieces, the gallery provides magnifying glasses for those who want to take a closer look.
The juror for this year’s show is Liana Bennett, a local artist who paints in acrylics, oils and mixed media. The best of show, first place, second place and other award winners will be announced when the show opens.
The art in the show will be available to purchase. “All of our art is very reasonably priced,” Goldade said.
A reception for the exhibit will be held from 5-8 p.m. May 12, during the Kirkland Art Walk.
