The Kirkland Public Works Department is in the early stages of updating the city’s Surface Water Master Plan.

The plan will identify projects and programs that reduce flooding, improve water quality and enhance aquatic habitat. As part of the update process, the city is holding an open house from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on May 1 at Finn Hill Middle School, 8040 N.E. 132nd St. City staff will give a presentation about the plan beginning at 6:45 p.m.

At the event, information will be on display about the current status of surface water management in Kirkland. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide comments, talk to project representatives, report neighborhood flooding problems or other local water issues, and help identify areas of focus such as priority projects and programs.

This is the first of two open houses planned for the plan update. These events will help ensure the updated Surface Water Master Plan includes projects and programs that address community interests and concerns.

Kirkland’s Surface Water Utility was formed in 1998 to ensure the proper maintenance and operation of all public and private surface water systems within the city. The Surface Water Master Plan was last updated in 2005. The plan is being updated now because the city’s population and area have increased by almost 40 percent after annexing a large part of unincorporated King County in 2011.
