Ways to reduce your energy usage | Letter to the editor

The Kirkland Reporter’s carbon-tax cartoon (Feb. 9) shows a very fatalistic view of energy usage. Since artist Frank Shiers seems to be having trouble thinking of ways he can affect his energy usage, I’ve got a few suggestions.

Gas usage can be reduced by walking, biking, busing, carpooling, trip merging or purchasing a more efficient car. Heating costs can be reduced by lowering the thermostat a degree or two, installing a smart thermostat or adding insulation. Electricity usage can be reduced by putting lights on timers and using LED bulbs.

Yes, it would be easier to not do any of these things, but making these changes will prepare Washington consumers for other energy cost increases, while also reducing our contribution to excess CO2 in the atmosphere.

It is also important to remember that the money we pay for gasoline and natural gas mostly goes to distant companies, states and countries. In contrast the revenue from a carbon tax stays in the state where it will be invested in clean energy programs and natural resource development.
