early Wednesday on the Eastlake High School Web site that Lake Washington High School Principal Brad Malloy will become Eastlake's new principal on July 1, replacing Greg Schellenberg, who is moving to China with his family.

The changes at Lake Washington High School are not confined to new construction.

It was posted early Wednesday on the Eastlake High School Web site that Lake Washington High School Principal Brad Malloy will become Eastlake’s new principal on July 1, replacing Greg Schellenberg, who is moving to China with his family.

A letter from Christina Thomas, who is currently the principal at BEST High School and the Family Learning Center, posted on the Lake Washington Web site said that she will take Malloy’s place and become the principal at North Star Junior High. Lake Washington High School Associate Principal and North Star Junior High Principal Nell Ballard-Jones will take over for Thomas.

Both letters were written to parents and community members.

“Summer work in a high school brings the hiring of new personnel and new opportunities for staff,” said Malloy in the letter. “In my case, I am excited to be returning home to serve as the principal of Eastlake High School and Renaissance.”

Malloy has served as the Lake Washington principal since 2006, and was the associate principal from 2002-2006. Malloy is no stranger to Eastlake High School as he served as assistant principal and associate principal from 1998–2002.

“As you may have heard, I will be assuming the principal position at Lake Washington High School,” said Thomas in her letter. “I am very excited to begin this opportunity and look forward to meeting each of you personally.”

Thomas has been an educator for 30 years and has split 13 years as a special education teacher between Eastlake, Lake Washington and Juanita High Schools.

“I was also an assistant principal at Kentwood High School for 10 years where I was responsible for implementing their 9-12 transition,” the letter said. “In addition, I have been at Eastlake High School as an associate principal and am currently the principal at BEST High School and the Family Learning Center. I have a strong instructional background and look forward to the challenge of moving Lake Washington High School to a ‘house’ system and the opening of the new school in 2012. Although there are many challenges ahead, I am confident that as a team we can accomplish amazing things in our efforts to improve student achievement.”

Ballard-Jones has been the principal at Northstar Junior High for three years.

“I’m excited to join two communities of parents, students, and education professionals who are committed to finding alternative ways to meet student academic and social needs,” said Ballard-Jones, in a statement on the BEST High School Web site.

A press release from the Lake Washington School District Thursday morning confirmed the changes.

The release also stated that:

• Prato Barone, current principal at Redmond Junior High School, replaces Nell Ballard-Jones as associate principal at Lake Washington High School, Kirkland.

• Shawna Rothaus, the current principal at Mead Elementary, replaces Linda Hughes, who is retiring, as principal at Lakeview Elementary School, Kirkland.

• Dana Stairs, from Snoqualmie Valley School District, replaces Paul Luczak, who is retiring, as principal at Juanita Elementary School, Kirkland. Dana has been Snoqualmie Valley’s specialist for intervention/enrichment; the district math and science coordinator; fifth grade teacher; and administrative intern at Fall City Elementary School. Dana earned her Bachelor of Arts from Washington State University, her Master of Arts at Pacific Lutheran University, and her principal certification at Western Washington University.
