Kobey Chew, a freshman at Juanita High School in Kirkland, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Chew was one of 20 students who served as Senate pages for the fourth week of the 2016 legislative session.

He was sponsored by Sen. Andy Hill, who represents Kirkland in the state Senate from the 45th District.

“I really liked being a page I would recommend it, especially if someone was on the fence about it,” Kobey said. Kobey also noted that he said the pledge of allegiance on the Senate floor, which was “a very cool experience.”

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

Kobey enjoys learning about history, politics, and participating in DECA.

Kobey, 14, is the son of Cassandra Sage of Kirkland.
