Kirkland resident Steven Pyeatt mobilized the community last January to rebuild Sgt. Leonid Milkin’s home, where the soldier’s wife, two boys and sister-in-law were brutally murdered in July 2006.

Sentenced to death in May, Connor Schierman set Milkin’s home on fire after the 2006 killings in an attempt to cover up the crimes.

Volunteers put finishing touches on the Slater Avenue home’s interior, installing cabinets and window coverings in July.

But there is more work left to do.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, local veterans, led by veteran Joe Cantwell of CDK Construction, are rallying behind Milkin in an effort to finish his garage, basement and landscaping. More than 10 local companies and business owners have generously donated materials to make this happen.

“They would like to help bring Sgt. Milkin some peace by completing the home, in memory of his family,” said Michele Yousef, volunteer project manager for the Milkin home rebuild effort, which was recently featured as the “Acts of Kindness” story in the National Enquirer.

Yousef invites the community to come prepared to work outside at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Slater Avenue home. Please bring gloves, rakes and wheelbarrows.

Refreshments will be provided.
