A Kirkland woman was rescued from her burning home by two off-duty Kirkland police officers Saturday afternoon.

The fire forced a 77-year-old woman out through a window onto the balcony of the home in the 13700 block of 115th Ave. NE in the Evergreen Hill neighborhood of Kirkland, according to Kirkland Fire Department officials.

The officers, who are also her neighbors, used a ladder to rescue her. The woman had to be transported to Harborview Medical Center for her injuries, where she remains, and the officers were transported to EvergreenHealth Medical Center but were shortly released. A third neighbor was also hospitalized.

Kirkland firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire but were able to put out the blaze a short time later. The first call of many came at 3:33 p.m. and firefighters had arrived by 3:37 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however it appears to be accidental, according to investigators. Kirkland Fire Department Battalion Chief Larry Peabody said the home suffered substantial damage and cannot be occupied at this time.

The Kirkland, Woodinville and Bothell Fire Departments responded to the scene.
