Church offers free community meal every Tuesday in Kirkland

Every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. for the past 20 years, locals have gathered together to share a free community meal in a spirit of togetherness.

Sponsored by the non-profit organization KITH (Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing), various volunteers from all sectors of society serve a hot, home-cooked supper, spiced with warm smiles and friendly manners, to all who come.

Conveniently located at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church on the corner of 100th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 124th Avenue, the charitable program typically welcomes an average of 60 attendees, ranging from about 35 during the summer to a high of around 100 at the winter holidays.

First started in the basement of the church, it now has expanded upstairs to the main dining hall, which has spacious seating as well as a full commercial kitchen to prepare all the food.

Mark Tillman, lead volunteer and facilitator of the meal, along with his assistant, are both affiliated with the Kirkland Kiwanis – a major supporter of KITH. The definition of the word “kith” means “one’s friends, acquaintances, neighbors, or relatives.”

Tillman has headed the logistics of the operation for the past four years. Both Tillman and his assistant take pleasure in helping others and giving back to the community, assisting in providing resources to those in need – whether food for the body or food for the soul.

Tyler Eckel, who lives just a few blocks up the street, has been to every single dinner the past 10 years. He swings by on his way home after work, accompanied by his personal caregiver Jeff Hoefer. They appreciate this time, enjoying the good food and interesting company, offered in a relaxed, casual setting.

Eckel and Hoefer occasionally run into some of the people they have met at the dinner – their neighbors – when they are out and about. To Hoefer, the idea behind the food is so important, not only to those who may be lacking but also to those who may not have others to share it with.

All are welcome to Kirkland’s only free Tuesday dinner and experience what it means to be kith, where neighbors can take part in a wholesome meal prepared and served with a caring heart by those who value community.
