The Kirkland City Council seeks interested individuals to formulate the “for” and “against” statements about a measure to increase the private utility tax rate which may be presented on the November General Election ballot. The City Council has not yet decided whether to place the issue on the ballot. The statements will appear in the voters’ pamphlet for the November General Election ballot measure. One committee will prepare the statement in favor of and one committee will prepare the statement against the ballot measure which shall ask City of Kirkland voters whether they want to approve an increase in the City’s private utility tax. Interested persons must complete a statement of interest that is available from Kathi Anderson, City Clerk, City of Kirkland by calling 425-587-3197 or downloading it from the City’s website at www.ci.kirkland.wa.us. Applications may be submitted in person or mailed to Kirkland City Hall, 123 5th Avenue, Kirkland, Washington, 98033, ATTN: City Clerk, emailed to kanderson@ci.kirkland.wa.us or faxed to 425-587-3198 no later than 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009.

Applications will be considered by the City Council at its meeting on July 7. The City Council will consider applicants’ residency, location of employment, local business ownership and voter registration. Applicants are required to submit a brief purpose statement that addresses his/her interest in serving on a committee.

Per King County elections standards, the committees will be required to prepare arguments which are limited to 200 words. The “Statement For” and the “Statement Against” (in addition to rebuttals of the opposing statements) will appear in the King County Local Voters’ Pamphlet for the November 3, 2009 General Election. Arguments will be submitted to King County Elections no later than 4:30 p.m., August 19, 2009.
