Some fathers smoke a cigar to celebrate the birth of a child. Tony Youn built a cigar room.
It has been a busy year for the Youn family, welcoming Isabelle into the world and preparing to open three new beer, wine and cigar boutique stores on the Eastside. The Kirkland store is celebrating its grand opening today.
“She is 7 1/2 months old,” said the proud father. “She was born at the same time we started this.”
Bottlez Up! is located in the Totem Lake neighborhood at 11506 124th Ave. N.E. and is truly a family business. While Tony runs the Kirkland location, his older brother Max, 30, will soon open his store in Bellevue and his father, Sam, will open a third location in Renton.
“Our parents owned a wine and cigar shop in Bellevue and we have learned about all the products from them,” said Tony. “It was a good influence cause they taught us how to enjoy (alcohol) and not abuse it.”
Tony, 28, was quick to point out that the store is for adults and that they are diligent about checking IDs.
Bottlez Up! specializes in microbrews and home-grown wine from around the Pacific Northwest. But the walk-in humidor and cigar selection is the most unique aspect.
“I think it is still a new concept for people,” said Tony. “Most people come in and think that we are a smoke shop or just wine. But we carry all three.”
One walk into the humidor and the smell of cedar and sight of ornate cigar boxes is enough to peak anyone’s senses.
“It is rare to have a walk-in humidor,” said Tony. “(Cigars are) something to share with friends and family. It is a leisure activity.”
The shop carries 600-700 different types of cigars. The humidor and supplies were a $30,000 investment alone. Tony says that Bottlez Up! has a wide selection and many customers are first-time cigar smokers.
“A lot of people come by and just want to try it,” said Tony, who tests out every brand of cigar before it is put on the shelf.
One of the most popular cigars that the store has in stock is Opus X, which runs between $40-120 each.
The store also sells individual humidors small and large. Tony said that Bottlez Up! is really three different rooms, with all the beer chilled in the refrigerator section and the wine on the main floor.
The wall of beers is impressive, with more than 1,000 beers that rotate through the shelves, which can hold between 300-400 single labels. From Mississippi Mudd to Hair of the Dog, the selection is unique and customers can even request beers that are not in stock. The store also carries some 2,500 wines.
“Twenty percent of our inventory is special requests,” said Max.
And while most of the beers and wine are from the local region, many of the wines are made within miles of the Kirkland store in Woodinville.
“We want to carry some of the smaller wineries,” said Tony, who got married at a winery in Woodinville. “Anyone who comes to visit us we take to Woodinville, not the Space Needle.”
Tony is hoping to partner with some of the wineries in the future for in-store events.
“We will try to do a weekly tasting for beer and wine,” said Tony.
Max and Tony grew up in Bellevue, went to Sammamish High School and the University of Washington but have many friends in Kirkland.
“This is a very diverse community with a lot of young people,” said Tony.
The brothers said they see a very diverse clientele, but remember some of their father’s regulars at the family’s original Bellevue store.
“We had football and baseball players coming in all the time,” said Max. “Shawn Kemp used to come in a lot.”
