For Leslie Stiles, his backyard was his sanctuary. It was the one place he could go after a long day of work, enjoy his view of Juanita Beach Park and escape civilization for a little while.

“It is an atrocity for the neighborhood,” said Stiles of the luxury Bel Lago condominiums that were built across the street from his home near the base of Goat Hill. “It is one of the biggest blights on a neighborhood I have ever seen.”

Despite neighbors’ objections, King County let the seven-and-a-half story behemoth be built between N.E. Juanita Drive and the shores of Lake Washington in 2006. The building blocks many neighbors’ views and towers over neighboring buildings, including another condo, by at least three-and-a-half stories. Bel Lago is the fourth largest building in Kirkland in terms of stories.

Kirkland resident Johanna Palmer filled plastic glasses with sparkling apple cider by the side of the road as midnight approached on Tuesday. A pregnant Kirkland woman got the scare of her life Saturday as her Range Rover dragged her 30 feet down her driveway and into a neighbors yard.
The unidentified 38-year-old woman had just returned home in the 500 block of 9th Ave. at about 10:45 a.m. She was retrieving items from the passenger side of the vehicle thinking it was in park, according to a Kirkland Police report, when it began to roll backwards down her driveway.

The Kirkland Michaels store, located at 9755 N.E. Juanita Drive, has been found to be apart of a ring of tampered debit card PIN pads that include 90 stores nationwide and five in Western Washington. The tampered PIN pads are believed to have compromised customers’ debit and credit card information from February 8 through May 6. Micheals has since disabled the compromised devices and removed the threat.
