During a KingCo league meet on Tuesday afternoon, the Liberty boys swimming team beat Juanita 109-76.
Earning their first KingCo win of the season, and riding a two game winning streak, the Juanita boys basketball team beat Interlake in overtime Tuesday night 59-54.
Picking up their 11th win of the regular season, and advancing to 6-1 in league games, Juanita beat Interlake Wednesday evening 54-41.
Solidifying their No. 3 spot in the KingCo standings, the Lake Washington girls basketball team earned a KingCo victory Wednesday night, beating Mercer Island. The final score was 39-30.
The Lake Washington gymnastics team beat Sammamish on Thursday, Jan. 5. The final score was 142.1 for the Kangs to the Totems 134.55.
Juanita wrestling hosted a league double dual on Thursday, Jan. 5 between the Rebels, Lake Washington, Mercer Island and Bellevue. During the meets, Juanita lost to both Mercer Island and Bellevue, as did Lake Washington.
Lake Washington head boy’s basketball coach Barry Johnson has been placed on leave by the district.
In an overtime thriller, Lake Washington beat previously undefeated Liberty, 42-41.
The Kirkland Pirates, a team playing in the Lake Washington Youth Soccer league, recently won their state competition, after going undefeated.
In the first league game of 2012, the Lake Washington Kangs easily took down Liberty Tuesday, Jan. 3.
The Kangs beat the Patriots 61-48 at home.
Playing in the 41st annual Bellevue College Holiday High School tournament, the Juanita boys finished sixth overall.
The Juanita girls basketball team hosted Kamiak on Wednesday, Dec. 28 as part of the KingCo/WesCo Challenge. The Rebels won 74-41.
Heading north for the winter break, the Lake Washington girls basketball program went to Alaska last week for the Doc Larson Roundball Classic, which is held in Wasilla, Alaska.
The last 12 months have, as is typical, been busy in Kirkland – especially in sports. Local teams have hit new highs and individuals have accomplished impressive feats.
It appears KingCo schools can prepare for some reclassification. While the numbers won’t be official until next month when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association executive board meets, it’s very likely there are changes coming for KingCo schools.
In two non-league games the Juanita boys basketball team lost to Snohomish, while the girls lost to 4A Issaquah.
It’s our last basketball poll of the year as we’ll be taking a break over the holidays.
Its hard, especially in the early season before everyone consistently plays league games, to really pin things down across the board, but here’s where we stand for week three. The Lake Washington boys dropped out of the 3A rankings after losing to Sammamish last week. The Juanita girls also slipped out of the rankings, despite their win over Mount Si last week.
Lake Washington’s Jack Michels, who wrestlers for the Kangs in the 220 weight class, is currently ranked No. 2 in his division in the 3A classification. He has also been ranked No. 2 across all classifications, behind a wrestler from a 2B school.
Kirkland resident Brandon Schumacher, 17, recently won the 17-18 year old Cyclocross state championship.
The Juanita boys swim team lost a league meet on Thursday, Dec. 15 to Mercer Island. The Rebels fell 127-59.
