Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Jerry Greenfield will be in Kirkland on Saturday to dish out free scoops of ice cream – and support for Initiative 522.

The Washington ballot measure would give grocery shoppers more information about the groceries they are buying and eating.

“Sourcing ingredients, perfecting formulas and updating packaging are tasks food producers handle on a regular basis,” Greenfield said. “So to those who say this can’t be done, that it’s too complicated, or too expensive – we wholeheartedly disagree. Ben & Jerry’s is proof. Supporting the I–522 initiative to label is doable at virtually no extra cost within the regular scope of business.”

Greenfield is in Washington all week and has already gone to such cities as Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma and Gig Harbor to show support for the measure.

During his visit to Kirkland on Sept. 14, he will stop at Juanita Bay Park to give out free scoops of ice cream between 10:30-11:15 a.m. The park is located at 2201 Market St., Kirkland. He will also be at the Kirkland Ben & Jerry’s between 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to promote I-522. The Kirkland store is located at 176 Lake St. S.

Elizabeth Larter, spokeswoman for “YES I-522,” said Greenfield has a “very compelling story” about why he supports the measure and how the company could label its products and make them “genetically-modified” free.
