My drive in the Mazda CX-9 almost made me wish I had a bunch of kids to haul around to various activities that all began within a 15-minute period at different locations on the Eastside. And then, I came to my senses and realized I’ve been there and done that with four kids spaced at two-year intervals.
The good old days in a boxy full-size van can now be replaced by a stylish, fun to drive crossover vehicle. Mazda’s CX-9 is a perfect vehicle to load up seven passengers and all their equipment to begin another day of sporting activities or just plain summer fun.
Mazda’s CX-9 is a great addition to the crossover automotive segment. Auto manufacturers refer to a crossover as everything from a small wagon to a big sport utility vehicle that feature the best of both worlds – a people mover that drives like a car.
The CX-9 exemplifies crossover characteristics by offering ample interior room, with three seating rows — and it drives like a car while offering a good view from its high seating position.
A 3.7-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission powers all three trims of the CX-9.
This engine is powerful and fuel-efficient as a people mover, but its towing capacity is limited. Mazda offers the CX-9 in front- or all-wheel drive. The Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trims all come standard with hands-free Bluetooth phone system.
My test vehicle was a fully loaded Grand Touring all-wheel drive model. The optional equipment included a navigation system, power moonroof, Bose audio with ten speakers, rear bumper step plate, and power open/close rear hatch. These features are great additions to the long list of standard equipment offered on the CX-9 including heated front seats, rain sensing wipers and a roof spoiler.
The exterior of Mazda’s CX-9 has sleeker lines and a sportier look than most crossovers. For the driver needing to move from a sporty sedan to family hauler, the CX-9 will definitely be the best transition available. It offers nimble performance that is not usually associated with this segment.
Inside the CX-9 is a very comfortable cabin refreshed this year with new upholstery and trim. The third row seating is easily accessible and I was able to climb in and out without a struggle. The third row seats are easy to raise and lower for additional cargo space.
Mazda’s CX-9 definitely offers the best of both worlds when it comes to people hauling and fun driving.
