In response to the the recent letters criticizing the likelihood of the Kirkland City Council passing the annexation ordinance, despite not achieving the required 60 percent threshold for outright passage (“Voting process waste of time and money” and “Council should not redo election results”), I think you guys are missing the point. The issue was put to a vote to determine the will of the people and the people have spoken. Whether you like it or not, the majority of voters did in fact vote to approve the annexation ordinance (59.94 percent to 40.06 percent, or 6291 to 4205). Yes, the “approve” vote did not achieve a 60 percent supermajority by a mere seven votes, but that does not overshadow the fact that more than 2,000 more residents of the PAA voted to approve this measure than reject it. Since the majority (over 50 percent) of the PAA residents did in fact vote to approve this measure, the Kirkland City Council has the ability to pass the annexation themselves.
This is a prime example of democracy in action, and on multiple levels. At the end of the day, the majority of PAA residents voted to approve this measure, so the democratically elected Kirkland City Council members will likely uphold this decision by the people. After all, anything less would be decidedly undemocratic.
