Great to meet the Mexico City team – on the bus | Letter

I loved reading your article about the Junior Softball World Series in the Kirkland Reporter on Aug. 14. We were very lucky to meet the Mexico City team on the Metro bus on their one day off, Aug. 3.

The Mexico City team was already on the bus when we got on. They were talking away in Spanish, and we nodded our hellos. Our grandchildren, Shannon and Evan Klug, are in Spanish Immersion in Laguna Hills, Calif., where they live, and began talking to them in Spanish. They switched from Spanish to English, back and forth. As you mentioned in the article, they aren’t fluent in English (but very good) and their coach, who is fluent, was not with them. We all got off at Westlake Center, but we were taking the trolly to MOHAI and the Center for Wooden Boats, so couldn’t take them to their destination, Pike Place Market. We found maps to show them where they needed to go. One of the girls gave us softball keychains, and we all felt so good about meeting each other.
