Does the city of Kirkland really want to lose its last year-round public pool? Unfortunately, the way the bond to rebuild Juanita High School is currently written, Juanita will get a new school, but the pool will not be rebuilt.

At the June 24 Citizens Advisory Committee meeting, district Superintendent Tracy Pierce explained that the pool would be closed if the bond option being put forward passes in February 2014.

I know this is a time of critically tight budgets, but how many times have the citizens of Kirkland voted to support the bonds (as evidenced by all the new school construction popping up all across the city)? How many times have parents stepped up to pay for “the extras” (busing, sports) to ensure more funds would go for the basics?

This is also a time of limited gym classes, less recess and more childhood obesity. It is time for us to remind the district that we are not going to lose Juanita pool or we might not be so quick to support the bond in February.

I encourage everyone to come to the next school board meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 at the L.E. Scarr Resource Center, located at 16250 NE 74th St., Redmond. Let the district know we want them to include a remodel/reconstruction of the pool in the wording of the bond.
