Regarding our newly annexed business owner neighbors, you should be aware that you will be paying a “fee” for the privilege of having your business in the City of Kirkland in the amount of $100 plus $100 per employee. In 2001, we were assessed $25 for our business license in total. With three employees our fee is now $400! When I called to ask about the 1,600 percent increase and what services I’d be receiving in exchange for this “fee” the answer was the monies would be going into the City of Kirkland’s “general fund.” When I asked what that was they said it was to help pay down their debt!? Can anyone tell me how being a business owner in our city entitles me to be a contributor to the city’s debt and have nothing to show for it except a piece of paper that I stick in the drawer for a year? This is not just a “fee.” It’s a penalty for having a business in the City of Kirkland with nothing to show for it.
