Sitting here listening to the final electioneering dribs and drabbles, I can only feel gratitude that it soon will be over and we will no longer be subjected to the countless and expensive streams of inane political ads. But my thankfulness is tempered since these ads have proven effective in the past (at least until this year, maybe). What does that say about the electorate? Ah, but life is good again now that they’ll vanish. Alas, they will start anew next spring. But I can take sardonic pleasure in knowing that, regardless of the outcome of the elections, we will all now be living in Edenic delight. No longer will we keep advancing toward larger deficits in every level of government. No longer will our educational system deteriorate. No longer will we have jobless scores of people. No longer will we have health care problems. No longer will jobs go overseas. No longer will the dollar fade. No longer will Middle East enemies hate us. And so on with “no longers” to the nth degree. Somewhere among that list must be a few “no longers” that pertain to Kirkland. Maybe our taxes will go down? But wait! I think I’ve lapsed into my “Once upon a time mode.”
